Abstract

Forensic Odontology is the branch of dentistry which deals with the proper handling and
examination of dental evidence and the proper evaluation and presentation of dental findings
in the interest of justice. Denture marking is accepted as a means of identifying dentures and
persons in geriatric institutions, during war, crimes, and civil unrest, natural and mass
disasters, post mortem and medico-legal investigations. Various methods have been proposed
for denture marking but it is important to use a method that is simple, practical, affordable
and universally acceptable. This paper reviews the various methods of denture marking and
highlights the significance of placing identification marks on dentures.

Abstract

Glandular odontogenic cyst is a rare odontogenic cyst occurring in the jaws. This occurs
mostly in the middle age and has a slight male predilection. Here we report a rare occurrence
of a case in an elderly female. A perfect schema for diagnosis and treatment is outlined.

Determination of position of mental foramen in Cone Beam Computed Tomography: A cross sectional study in Chennai

Abstract

To determine the position of mental foramen based on the height from alveolar crest and lower border of the
mandible from CBCT scans. The purpose of the study is to determine the position of mental foramen based on
the height fromalveolar crest and lower border of the mandible from CBCT scans. Materials and methodsA
total of 50 CBCT scans were evaluated. The number, size and form of the mental foramen were recorded and
their three dimensional relationship with the mandibular premolars were observed and noted. The position of
each mental foramen relative to bony reference points were be measured, and distances from mental foramen
to the cement enamel junctions of the mandibular premolars were measured.Results:The average values were
obtained for the distance between the mental foramen and the alveolar crest, mental foramen to the lower border
of the mandible, the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the mental foramen. All of the individuals has a
single mental foramen which was ovoid in shape. The mean horizontal dimensions were (2.70±0.73)mm and
(2.73±0.72)mm on the right and left sides respectively. Vertical dimensions were (2.20±0.65)mm and
(1.86±0.16)mm respectively on the right and left sides. Mean distances from the mental foramen to alveolar
crest and the lower border of the mandible were (11.35±3.92,10.48±2.84) and (9.47±1.48, 9.72±1.38)
respectively. ConclusionThe average values obtained from the study help in understanding the anatomy and
position of the mental foramen better on CBCT. The detailed information about the relationship between mental
foramen and its surrounding structures will facilitate diagnostic and surgical procedures done in the oral and
maxillofacial region

Abstract

Mass disaster situations may arise from natural or manmade circumstances like bioterrorism and
dentists or dental responders have significant roles in human identification, following such
occurrences. The various roles of dentists in mass disaster management, that include bio surveillance
and notification, diagnosis and monitoring, triage, referrals of patients, immunizations,
decontamination and infection control would be considered. The varying extents of use of forensic
dental techniques and the resulting positive impacts made on human identification will also be
included. The importance of preparation by way of special training for the dental personnel, mass
disaster rehearsal, and use of modern day technology will be stressed on

Abstract

Oral submucous fibrosis is a premalignant condition which affects the submucosal layer of oral mucousmembrane. Trismus is the most severe presentation of this disease which jeopardizes the nutrition status of theindividual. To achieve the adequate mouth opening, the complete release of fibrotic tissue is essential. However,incising the fibrotic tissue with a conventional blade or electrocautery can cause bleeding, delayed healing, andrecurrence of fibrosis.A laseris a device that generates light by a process called STIMULATED EMISSION.The acronym LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation Semiconductinglasers are a multilayer semiconductor device that generates a coherent beam of monochromatic light by laseraction. A coherent beam resulted which all of the photons are in phase. Diode laser has favorable features likegood hemostatic properties and flexibility of the probe which makes it useful in the limited access; especiallyin trismus.

Abstract

Root canal procedure includes access opening, cleaning and shaping and a proper obturation with adequate seal
of the root canal. Complete debridement of the smear layer and the infective microorganisms is an important
step in the procedure. Root canal irrigants is necessary to flush out the debris, dissolving tissue and for
disinfecting the root canal. Aim: To assess the knowledge about the various effects of the root canal irrigants in
the root canal treatment among dental students. Objective: The objective of this survey would be to understand
the awareness of the various root canal irrigants among dental students. Materials and methods: A closed ended
questionnaire containing 15 questions were given to 300 dental students of third year, final year and interns.
Results: The results of the survey showed that sodium hypochlorite was the most popular irrigant and
chlorhexidine was the second most popular irrigant if the patient was allergic to chlorine.

Abstract

To assess the prevalence of oral lesions and adverse oral habits in residents of a specific locality in chennai. Materials and method:Questionnaire based survey with oral screening. 100 subjects were evaluatedin this study in a specific locality in chennai.Results In this study a total of 100 people were screened. Out of100, 65 were females 35 were male subjects. The prevalence of oral lesions was found to be 15%. The orallesions which were found during the clinical examination includes lingual tonsils (6%), fissured tongue (4%),aphthous ulcer (4%), lichen planus (1%). 23% of people have the habit of smoking, 15% of people paanchewing, 12% tobacco chewing and 10% of people consumed alcohol in this study. Conclusion: Theprevalence of oral habits and lesions were significantly less in the present study. Epidemiological studieshelps in finding out the disease in a specific area so that special programs can be conducted to make thepeople aware of the oral lesions and adverse oral habits

Abstract

Introduction-Dentures, also known as false teeth, are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth;
they are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are
removable (removable partial denture or complete denture)Aim and objective: The Aim of this research is to
find out the common problems faced by the patients wearing complete denture.Materials and methods : This
study was conducted in chennai. A sample of about 50 elderly people wearing complete dentures was selected
for the study . A questionnaire was used to collect all the information. And the results were analysed
quantitatively and qualitatively.Results and conclusion : The results of our study showed that 72% of people
did not face any pain while insertion and removal of dentures, and 44% of men had inability during chewing
whereas 28% of the women face inability during chewing. The food accumulation problem was faced by
56% of males and 72% of females. 36% of females had discomfort while speaking and 20% of males faced
discomfort. And about 52% of females and 40% of males showed some amount of neglect towards denture
cleansing. 48% of males and 60% of females did not face any bad breath problems because they maintained
their dentures well. Both male and female of about 40% had sore spots. Digestive problems were faced by
36% of both females and males. 32% of females and 8% of males had Painful gums . About 56% of men and
48% of women had reduced self esteem due to ill fitting dentures. And also 24% of females and 20% of males
had psychological gagging problem

Abstract

Dental radiographic devices act as potential source of cross–contamination even though they are not directlyinvolved in any invasive procedures. The frequently accessed objects in a radiographic room such as theradiographic sensor, the tube head, and the timer button act as sources of contamination. The detectors used indigital radiography devices are not autoclavable and are highly susceptible to cross–contamination. The aimof this study is to demonstrate the possibility of the presence of pathogenic microorganisms in frequentlyaccessed parts of the radiographic devices.Materials and methods:Five surfaces that were frequentlytouched by the operator were analyzed. The surfaces chosen for testing for contamination are pre–startbutton, the tube head, the sensor, the touchpad of the computer connected to the sensor and the door handle ofthe radiographic room. All surface were wiped with sterile gauze containing 2.45 % glutaraldehyde at the startof the day and a sterile swab moistened with sterile saline solution were rubbed on each of the abovementioned surfaces and were cultured nutrient agar. After 4 hours, a sterile swab moistened with saline wasused to collect samples from all the surfaces again and were cultured in nutrient agar, MacConkey agar andblood agar. The plates were examined after inoculation and 24 hours of incubation. Samples from 2 consecutive days were collected and checked for microbial contamination.Results:The growth of microbialflora on the culture plates showed that there was contamination of all 5 surfaces analyzed. It is believed thatthe results of this study can help build a better disinfection system of radiographic devices if the presence ofpathogenic bacteria become evident through the study.

The major challenge in forensic dentistry is the analysis of bite marks in human skin. A
recurring difficulty in analysis arises from the distortion which is a variable feature of bite
marks. Distortion may complicate or even preclude proper comparison of the bite mark and
the causal dentition. Distortion may arise in a number of ways. The action of biting may
produce tissue distortion and dynamic distortion. Evidence recording of the bite mark may
produce posture distortion and photographic distortion. Ante and post mortem changes may
also introduce distortion. This review explains the types of distortion and limitations of bite
marks

Abstract

Bronchial asthma is characterized by hyper responsiveness of tracheobronchial smooth muscle to variety of
stimuli resulting in narrowing of air tubes often accompanied by increased secretion , mucosal edema and
mucus plugging. Extrinsic asthma is mostly episodic less prone to status asthmaticus. Intrinsic asthma tends to
be perennial status asthmaticus is more common. The knowledge of herbal plant parts is more effective and
useful in the treatment of many diseases including bronchial asthma.Among many respiratory diseases
bronchial asthma is more common and people suffer from chronic illness in the respiratory system.
Andrographis paniculata, Astercantha longifolia, Leaf of “parsley, Rumex vesicarius and Rauvolfia serpentina
are some of the important plants which are discussed and studied in this short review. This review summarises
the role of the potential plants in the treatment of bronchial asthma.

Gender estimation plays an important role in the field of anthropology and forensic sciences.Forensic odontologists can determine the gender of the remains using teeth and skull traits Various features of teeth such as morphology, crown size, and root length are characteristics of male and female sexes.There are also differences in the skull pattern and skull traits of the two sexes. These will help forensic odontologists to identifythe sex of the remains.The aim of this review is to enlist all the metric features available to distinguish betweenthe genders.

Abstract

One of the most significant parts of forensic dentistry is age estimation. Dentists are frequently called upon bythe legal system to justify a person's age. It's also the third and final phase in the reconstructive dental profiling process. While variousphysiologic parameters can be used to determine a person's age, the dynamic structureof teeth provides several unique and dependable ways to determine a person's age using invasive or non-invasivemethods. Teeth are one of the few physiologic markers thatcan be used to estimate age from childhood tomaturity.Teethendurepost-developmentalalterationsevenaftertheyreachmaturity,makingthemasolidmeasure of age assessment in adult as well.

Abstract

Forensic investigations frequently utilize facial reconstructions/approximations to stimulate recognition and
identification. The process of completing a three-dimensional clay reconstruction can take several days to
complete. With the advent of user-friendly computer software and methods, the time taken to produce a facial
reconstruction process could potentially be reduced to mere hours. These developments saves both time and
money, as well as increasing the reliability of the technique. Forensic facial reconstruction could be a very
powerful tool in future mass human identification scenarios. According to our review, 3D computer
reconstruction and video superimposition have a useful role in the process of identification, particularly in the
early stages of an investigation and when other more definitive methods may not be available.

Abstract

Dengue is a vector borne disease and is the most common arbovirus – caused disease in humans. It is known
for its increased mortality and morbidity over the years in tropical and subtropical countries of the world. In
India, it is an endemic and is a public concern in monsoon due to increased spread of the disease as there is an
increase of mosquitoes in the season. It manifests as fever, joint pain and retro orbital pain. Diagnosis is made
by clinical and serological examination and frequently involves venepuncture. This review is about early and
non – invasive method of diagnosis of dengue using saliva and oral manifestations of dengue.

Abstract

As we trend in the era of technological advancements and medical breakthroughs, the human race continues to
face stiff uphill challenges in the form of crimes & heinous activities which produce irreversible damage.
Nevertheless, the collateral effects of these negative activities create shattering effects on the lives of the
victims, family & friends. Though little can be done to repair the damage inflicted, the prosecution of the
perpetrator and the identification of the victim is essential.
It is in this juncture; the field of forensics comes into the picture. The forensic specialist plays a pivotal
role or a link in between the medical & legal fields, in identification of the victim & the perpetrator. Forensic
medicine primarily deals with establishing the time & cause of death while forensic dentistry is used to establish
the identity of the individual based on the dental records. Cheiloscopy is derived from the Greek word cheilos
– lip, and skopein—to observe. It is the terminology given to the study of lip print patterns. Lip prints are normal
lines and grooves present in the zone of transition of the human lip, between the labial mucosa and the skin.
The arrangement of the lip prints is unique to each individual just like the fingerprints. Research studies and
information regarding the use of lip prints as evidence for personal identification, although old are scanty. The
recording and analyzing of lip prints is also very easy, less tedious and non – expensive. This is in stark contrast
with DNA fingerprints where the processing is difficult and time consuming and needless to mention the cost
factor involved in the processing of lip prints.

Abstract

Forensic odontology is a branch that connects dentistry and the legal profession. Humans have an identity in
life; compassionate societies desire that this identity be established and recognised even after death. The need
for personal identification is becoming increasingly important in modern life and regardless of the method used
is ubiquitous in daily lives. We dentists can contribute to personal identification through several simple
methods. The dental identification methods using comparative methods offer highly reliable means of
establishing the identity of a person. But there is a huge limitation in the form of missing ante-mortem records,
even if they are present there is a deficiency in the standardisation and constant update of the same. Hence the
need of the hour is to create centralised dental records database.

Abstract

The mandibular canal transmits the inferior alveolar artery, vein and the inferior alveolar nerve. From an
embryological perspective, there might be three inferior dental nerves innervating three groups of mandibular
teeth. During rapid prenatal growth and remodeling in the ramus region there is spread of intramembranous
ossification that eventually forms the mandibular canal. The presence of bifid mandibular canal reported in the
literature varies from 0.08% to 0.9%. The mandibular canal is responsible for the innervations of pulp tissue of
all mandibular teeth is a target area for mandibular block technique. An extra mandibular canal may explain
inadequate anesthesia, especially when two mandibular foramina are present. During a mandibular surgery, a
second or even third, neurovascular bundle maybe damaged causing paresthesia causing neuroma development
or bleeding.

Abstract

Exophytic lesions in the oral cavity leads to diagnostic challenge because of various appearances and
etiologic factors causing them. Pyogenic granuloma is inflammatory hyperplasia, that occurs commonly in
oral cavity of young females on the gingiva. Extraoral occurrence is very rare. This case report presents
extra-gingival pyogenic granuloma of lower labial mucosa in a 17-year-old male with unusual history and
appearance.
