Awareness Among Dental Students Regarding The Role Of Artificial Intelligence And Its Application In Oral Medicine And Radiology- A Cross - Sectional Questionnaire-Based Study

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science dedicated to building systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. the field of AI has experienced phenomenal development and growth over the past two decades. AI has begun to have an impact on diagnostic and treatment modalities in the health sector. the use of AI in dentistry has enormous potential to improve patient care and drive major advances in healthcare

Aim: This study aims to assess the awareness among dental students about AI and its application in oral medicine and radiology as understanding the basic concept working principle and likely applications of AI as a diagnostic tool is necessary for its widespread use.Method: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study comprising of 20 questions circulated through Google forms to 150 dental students.Result: In a survey of 100 participants, it was found that 98% had heard of AI, but only 57% knew its basic working concept. 74% of the participants agreed that AI could assist in diagnosis and treatment planning, and 85% were aware of its use in forensic dentistry. Moreover, 85% of the participants suggested that AI should be incorporated into the curricula of dental students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.Conclusion: Our study recommends delivering lectures to increase awareness about AI and its applications in dentistry, especially in oral medicine and radiology
