Impact on Midline Shift in Aesthetic Perception among General Public

Abstract

Introduction:A lot of patients present to the dentists with midline shift.However, there are also times where the patients do not realize that they have a midline shift until their dentist informs them about it.The aim of this research is to find out the impact of midline shift and aesthetic perception of midline shift among general public and to find out if there is a difference in both their perceptions. MaterialsandMethods: A study was conducted among 100 general public in which they were given nine photographs of a female whose smile was digitally altered using a software. A midline shift of 1mm, 2mm, 3mm towards the right side and left side also a midline

tilt was done in the photographs. The results were given following the statistical analysis both qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: The results of our study showed that the lay people found the midline shift to be very obvious and bad when the shift more than 2mm on both right and left side. Whereas 27% of the people graded the smile with midline of 2mm towards right side as average and10% of the people graded the smile to be bad.In addition, when there was midline tilt towards right side, about 28% of the people graded the smile to be average and 3% of the people graded it to be bad. Whent here was midline, tilt toward the Left, side about 24% of the people graded the smile to be average and 10% of the people graded it to be bad. Conclusion: From the study were able to conclude that trivial changes in the midline of the patient can be detected by the untrained.
