Abstract

Background: Maxillofacial defects caused by oncologic surgery, trauma, or congenital anomalies can significantly affect facial appearance, oral function, and psychosocial well-being. Maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation aims to restore facial form, improve oral function, and enhance patient confidence and quality of life.

Objectives: To systematically review the available literature evaluating quality of life and psychosocial outcomesfollowing maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation.

Methods and Methodology: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and EBSCO host databases. Google Scholar was additionally used for supplementary searches. Studies published between January 2000 and December 2024 were considered to identify studies reporting quality-of-life or psychosocial outcomes in patients rehabilitated with maxillofacial prostheses. Observational studies evaluating patient-reported outcomes following prosthetic rehabilitation were included. Data regarding study characteristics, prosthesis type, and outcome measures were extracted and synthesized.

Results: The search identified 486 records. After removal of duplicates and screening, 19 studies involving 567 patients with maxillofacial defects were included in the final analysis. Most studies reported improvements in oral function, facial appearance, psychological well-being, and social participation following prosthetic rehabilitation. Implant-retained prostheses were frequently associated with improved retention and higher patient satisfaction compared with conventional prostheses. However, heterogeneity in study design and outcome measures limited direct comparison across studies.

Conclusion: Maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation is associated with significant improvements in quality of life and psychosocial outcomes in patients with maxillofacial defects. Further well-designed studies using standardized outcome measures are required to strengthen the evidence base.
