Abstract

Background: Stress is a common psychological phenomenon among healthcare trainees, particularly postgraduate dental students who must balance academic responsibilities, clinical duties, and research commitments. Persistent stress can negatively affect academic performance, mental health, and patient care. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence, sources, and severity of stress among postgraduate dental students using a structured questionnaire.

Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among postgraduate dental students in a tertiary dental teaching institution. A validated self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic details and stress-related items was distributed to participants. Stress levels were evaluated using a modified Dental Environment Stress (DES) scale covering academic, clinical, financial, and personal domains.

Results: A total of 120 postgraduate students participated in the study. The majority of participants reported moderate to high levels of stress. Major stressors identified included workload associated with clinical requirements, fear of academic failure, time constraints, and pressure to complete dissertations and publications.

Conclusion: The findings indicate that postgraduate dental students experience considerable stress due to academic, clinical, and research demands. Institutional interventions such as stress management programs, mentorship systems, and workload optimization may help mitigate stress and improve overall well-being among postgraduate dental trainees.
