Abstract
Background: Strip crowns are widely used for restoring primary anterior teeth because of their excellent esthetics. However, discoloration and reduced color stability can compromise their long-term clinical performance. Incorporating nanoparticles into strip crown materials has been proposed as a strategy to improve resistance to aging and enhance optical stability. Aim: To evaluate the effect of bamboo-derived silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanoparticles on the color stability of cellulose acetate strip crown material following artificial aging. Materials and Methods: Cellulose acetate membranes were fabricated using the phase inversion technique and reinforced with bamboo-derived bio-silica nanoparticles at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% by weight. A control group without nanoparticles was included. All specimens underwent 1000 hours of artificial environmental aging. Color stability was evaluated using the CIE Lab* color system, and overall color change (ΔE) along with National Bureau of Standards (NBS) units were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and the F-test with a significance level of α = 0.01. Results: Mean ΔE values were 1.46 for the control group, 1.70 for the 0.5% group, 2.45 for the 1% group, 2.91 for the 2% group, and 3.34 for the 3% group. The 0.5% bio-silica group showed no statistically significant difference compared with the control (p > 0.01), whereas higher nanoparticle concentrations demonstrated increased color change, although all values remained within clinically acceptable limits. Conclusion: Incorporation of 0.5% bamboo-derived silicon dioxide nanoparticles significantly enhances the color stability of cellulose acetate strip crown material without adversely affecting esthetics. This modification shows promise for improving the longevity and clinical performance of pediatric anterior restorations.
