Abstract

Background: While tattoos are often regarded as artistic or personal expressions, they hold substantial forensic relevance, particularly in the context of human identification and behavioural profiling during medico-legal investigations. This case-based study aims to explore the evidentiary significance of tattoos in forensic pathology by demonstrating how dermal markings can contribute to reconstructing the identity, psychosocial profile, and potential lifestyle factors of deceased individuals.

Methods: The report presents four distinct forensic cases wherein tattoos played a pivotal role in the post-mortem analysis. Each case was examined in conjunction with toxicological reports, witness testimonies, and circumstantial findings. A multidisciplinary interpretative approach was employed to evaluate the symbolic, cultural, and psychological connotations of each tattoo.

Results: In all four cases, the presence and interpretation of tattoos yielded critical leads that either corroborated existing evidence or provided new investigative pathways. Tattoos served as indicators of substance abuse history, emotional affiliations, criminal associations, and psychological predispositions. Their correlation with toxicology results and background information enabled a more comprehensive forensic profile of the deceased.

Conclusion: This study underscores the growing importance of tattoos as forensic markers in contemporary death investigations. Beyond serving as identifiers, tattoos offer insights into behavioural patterns and social identity, enhancing forensic interpretation's scope. The findings advocate for the systematic documentation, cataloguing, and contextual analysis of tattoos as part of standard medico-legal protocols.
