Abstract

Introduction: Tobacco use remains a significant public health concern worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like India. This study investigates the prevalence, patterns, and determinants of tobacco use among adults in Tamil Nadu using data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). Materials and methods: The survey, employing a structured questionnaire, encompassed diverse socio-demographic groups to provide a comprehensive understanding of tobacco-related behaviours. Statistical analysis, performed using SPSS, revealed significant insights into the socio-economic and demographic factors influencing tobacco consumption. Results: Among the 600 respondents, tobacco use prevalence was 29.6%, with significantly higher consumption among males (42.3%) than females (15.1%), and bidis, gutkha, and betel quid with tobacco being the most commonly used products. Tobacco use was highest among individuals with no formal education and laborers, while awareness of health risks was greater for smoked tobacco (72%) than for smokeless tobacco (58%).Conclusion: The findings revealed the urgent need for tailored public health interventions in Tamil Nadu to combat the growing burden of tobacco use.
