Abstract
Introduction: This study addresses a significant void in the literature by examining the link between tobacco use, nicotine dependence and sleep disturbances offering insights into the health impacts of tobacco consumption so we can provide better support for individuals trying to quit tobacco and improve their overall health. This study aimed to assess the association between quality of sleep and nicotine dependence among male tobacco users attending tobacco cessation counselling.
Materials and methods:194 male tobacco users who are above 18 years and without any medical conditions related to sleep disturbance were approached and enrolled with their consent for participating in the study. A 3-part questionnaire was used which includes Part A habitual history; Part B Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence and Part C Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The comparisons between the qualitative variables were performed using the Chi-squared test.
Results: Out of 194 male tobacco users, 60.8% were using smoking tobacco, 30.4% were using smokeless tobacco and 8.8% were using both forms. Significant association was found between nicotine dependence and sleep disturbances among smoking tobacco users and smokeless tobacco users with P value of 0.00.
Conclusion: The study found a significant association between nicotine dependence and sleep disturbance among male tobacco users attending a cessation clinic. Higher nicotine dependence among smoking tobacco users was associated with poorer sleep quality. Users of both smoking and smokeless tobacco exhibited greater sleep-related problems. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating assessment and management of sleep disturbances into tobacco cessation programs to improve cessation outcomes and overall health.
