Abstract

Background:Teledentistry is a branch of dentistry that facilitates the delivery of healthcare services to patients in remote and inaccessible areas. It is utilized across various dental specialties, with oral medicine being the most commonly practiced. Teledentistry proved especially valuable during pandemic situations such as COVID-19, where close patient contact was restricted.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among dental students at Madha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. A self designed questionnaire consisting of 16 questions was used for data collection. The sample size was determined using G*Power, which indicated a required sample size of 199 participants.

Results:A total of 250 Google Forms were distributed, out of which 201 fully completed responses were received. About 68.61% of undergraduate (UG) students and 58.33% of postgraduate (PG) students believed that caries detection can be accurately performed through online consultations. Additionally, 60.63% of UG students and 83.33% of PG students preferred teledentistry over conventional clinical diagnosis.

Conclusion: Digital media is a powerful and cost-effective tool for promoting oral health awareness and facilitating behavior change. While it offers substantial benefits in terms of accessibility and engagement, addressing issues related to content accuracy and digital access is essential. Strategic implementation and regulation of digital platforms can enhance their potential in improving global oral health outcomes.
