Background:
Restoration of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) is essential for functional, esthetic, and psychosocial rehabilitation. Conventional post-and-core systems often require extensive tooth reduction, whereas endocrowns offer a conservative adhesive alternative for teeth with significant coronal loss.
Objective: To summarize current evidence on the clinical performance, biomechanical behavior, material selection, and social relevance of endocrowns.
Methods:
A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, including in vitro studies, finite element analyses, clinical trials, and systematic reviews evaluating endocrowns.
Results:
Endocrowns showed survival and fracture resistance comparable to or superior to post-and-core crowns, with predominantly repairable failure modes. Lithium disilicate and resin-based ceramics demonstrated favorable outcomes. Their minimally invasive design, reduced chair time, and potential cost-effectiveness support use across diverse socioeconomic settings.
Conclusion:
Endocrowns are a conservative and effective option for restoring ETT, offering favorable biomechanical and clinical outcomes, with potential benefits for oral and social rehabilitation.
