Extraction and Purification of Food-Grade C-Phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis and Its Bioactive Properties

Abstract

Introduction:

Dental crowding is associated with a difference between the existing space and the necessary space of the teeth on the arches, this being a possible symptom of skeletal malocclusions. The clinical forms of crowding are mild, moderate or severe depending on their manifestation. Attrition is described as the condition resulting mainly from tooth to tooth contact without any foreign substance intervention. It is also described as the physiological wearing off of teeth. Microalgae, particularly Spirulina platensis, play a vital role in the production of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds due to their high protein content and bioactive pigments. The present study focuses on an efficient method for the extraction and purification of food-grade phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis. The optimized extraction process, involving sonication for effective cell wall disruption under controlled pH and temperature, yielded a phycocyanin purity ratio of 0.75 mg ml−1. Ammonium sulfate precipitation was identified as an economical and non- toxic technique suitable for large-scale food applications. The purified pigment exhibited a characteristic UV absorption peak at 606 nm and FT-IR confirmation of amide I bands at 1638 cm−1, indicating the presence of C=O stretching in the protein backbone. C-phycocyanin, a natural blue water-soluble and fluorescent protein, demonstrated significant bioactivity, including antibacterial effects against Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp., E. coli, Bacillus sp., and Pseudomonas sp., as well as potential anticancer and cardioprotective properties. These findings highlight the potential of Spirulina-derived phycocyanin as a valuable bioactive compound for food and pharmaceutical industries.
