Abstract

Background: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign but aggressive neoplasm with a high recurrence rate. Surgical resection can leave functional and aesthetic deficits. Prosthetic rehabilitation plays a crucial role in restoring function and esthetics in pediatric patients with maxillofacial defects.Case Description: A six-year-old male presented with a maxillary defect following MNTI resection at four months of age. A phased treatment plan was implemented, including caries management and prosthetic rehabilitation.Intervention: A novel treatment modality using a hollow-bulb removable partial denture (RPD) was chosen to provide functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. The prosthesis was designed to restore lost labial support, improve retention, and ensure functional stability while minimizing weight for enhanced comfort.Results: Post-treatment follow-up at 1 year showed successful adaptation with no new complaints, indicating the effectiveness of the chosen rehabilitation approach.Conclusion: The hollow-bulb RPD proved to be a viable solution for restoring the anterior maxillary defect post-MNTI resection, ensuring improved masticatory efficiency, speech, and overall quality of life. This case highlights a practical approach for functional rehabilitation in a growing child with a post-surgical maxillary defect. It also demonstrates the clinical utility of a hollow-bulb RPD in achieving adequate retention with reduced prosthesis weight.
