Abstract
Background: Early childhood caries (ECC) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting young children worldwide and remains a significant public health challenge. The Lift-the-Lip technique is a simple, rapid, and non-invasive screening method that facilitates the early detection of white-spot lesions and incipient enamel changes before cavitation develops. It also promotes early intervention through parent education and preventive counselling. Aim: To evaluate the role of the Lift-the-Lip technique in the early detection and prevention of early childhood caries while assessing its applicability in community-based oral health screening and preventive programs. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Lift-the-Lip screening technique to identify early signs of ECC. The study emphasized the use of this simple visual examination by dental professionals, parents, teachers, caregivers, and community health workers (CHWs). Clinical observations were integrated with preventive education and anticipatory guidance to improve awareness and encourage timely referral for dental care. Results: The Lift-the-Lip technique enabled early identification of white-spot lesions and initial enamel demineralization, facilitating prompt preventive intervention. The screening approach enhanced awareness among caregivers and community workers while reinforcing oral health education, preventive practices, and early dental visits. The technique was found to be particularly valuable in community and Anganwadi settings where access to routine dental screening is limited. Conclusion: The Lift-the-Lip technique is an effective, inexpensive, and practical screening tool for the early detection of ECC. Its incorporation into community-based oral health programs can improve early diagnosis, strengthen preventive strategies, promote anticipatory guidance, and reduce the burden of early childhood caries through timely intervention.
