Evaluation of the Rate of Canine Retraction and Pain Perception followed by Administration of Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin: A Split Mouth Study

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of the local administration of injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin on the rate of canine retraction.

METHODS: This split-mouth trial included 10 subjects who underwent canine retraction aided with injectable PRF (i-PRF) injected into the buccal, distal, and palatal intraligamentary sites of the canine on the intervention side, with saline administered as a control on the contralateral side every 30 days. Canine retraction was initiated by applying 150 grams of force, and intraoral scans were taken every 30 days for 90 days and assessed for canine retraction. Pain perception was assessed with Visual analog scale. Statistical analysis was conducted, with significance set at p < 0.05.

 RESULTS: Statistically significant higher canine retraction was observed after administering I-PRF in the first month compared to control side (p=0.012), and significantly less canine retraction was observed in the second month (p=0.036) in I-PRF side and no significant difference by the third month. Pain scores were higher in the I-PRF group after 24 hours (p=0.007) but lower after one week (p=0.011).

CONCLUSION: The results of this clinical trial indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in canine retraction between i-PRF and control.
