Determination of position of mental foramen in Cone Beam Computed Tomography: A cross sectional study in Chennai

Abstract
To determine the position of mental foramen based on the height from alveolar crest and lower border of the
mandible from CBCT scans. The purpose of the study is to determine the position of mental foramen based on
the height fromalveolar crest and lower border of the mandible from CBCT scans. Materials and methodsA
total of 50 CBCT scans were evaluated. The number, size and form of the mental foramen were recorded and
their three dimensional relationship with the mandibular premolars were observed and noted. The position of
each mental foramen relative to bony reference points were be measured, and distances from mental foramen
to the cement enamel junctions of the mandibular premolars were measured.Results:The average values were
obtained for the distance between the mental foramen and the alveolar crest, mental foramen to the lower border
of the mandible, the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the mental foramen. All of the individuals has a
single mental foramen which was ovoid in shape. The mean horizontal dimensions were (2.70±0.73)mm and
(2.73±0.72)mm on the right and left sides respectively. Vertical dimensions were (2.20±0.65)mm and
(1.86±0.16)mm respectively on the right and left sides. Mean distances from the mental foramen to alveolar
crest and the lower border of the mandible were (11.35±3.92,10.48±2.84) and (9.47±1.48, 9.72±1.38)
respectively. ConclusionThe average values obtained from the study help in understanding the anatomy and
position of the mental foramen better on CBCT. The detailed information about the relationship between mental
foramen and its surrounding structures will facilitate diagnostic and surgical procedures done in the oral and
maxillofacial region

Abstract
Mass disaster situations may arise from natural or manmade circumstances like bioterrorism and
dentists or dental responders have significant roles in human identification, following such
occurrences. The various roles of dentists in mass disaster management, that include bio surveillance
and notification, diagnosis and monitoring, triage, referrals of patients, immunizations,
decontamination and infection control would be considered. The varying extents of use of forensic
dental techniques and the resulting positive impacts made on human identification will also be
included. The importance of preparation by way of special training for the dental personnel, mass
disaster rehearsal, and use of modern day technology will be stressed on

Abstract
Oral submucous fibrosis is a premalignant condition which affects the submucosal layer of oral mucousmembrane. Trismus is the most severe presentation of this disease which jeopardizes the nutrition status of theindividual. To achieve the adequate mouth opening, the complete release of fibrotic tissue is essential. However,incising the fibrotic tissue with a conventional blade or electrocautery can cause bleeding, delayed healing, andrecurrence of fibrosis.A laseris a device that generates light by a process called STIMULATED EMISSION.The acronym LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation Semiconductinglasers are a multilayer semiconductor device that generates a coherent beam of monochromatic light by laseraction. A coherent beam resulted which all of the photons are in phase. Diode laser has favorable features likegood hemostatic properties and flexibility of the probe which makes it useful in the limited access; especiallyin trismus.

Assessment of knowledge about the effects of root canal Irrigants among Dental students

Abstract
Root canal procedure includes access opening, cleaning and shaping and a proper obturation with adequate seal
of the root canal. Complete debridement of the smear layer and the infective microorganisms is an important
step in the procedure. Root canal irrigants is necessary to flush out the debris, dissolving tissue and for
disinfecting the root canal. Aim: To assess the knowledge about the various effects of the root canal irrigants in
the root canal treatment among dental students. Objective: The objective of this survey would be to understand
the awareness of the various root canal irrigants among dental students. Materials and methods: A closed ended
questionnaire containing 15 questions were given to 300 dental students of third year, final year and interns.
Results: The results of the survey showed that sodium hypochlorite was the most popular irrigant and
chlorhexidine was the second most popular irrigant if the patient was allergic to chlorine.
