Abstract

Introduction:

Tooth bleaching is a minimally invasive esthetic procedure; however, it may adversely affect enamel surface characteristics and compromise the bonding of composite restorations. These effects may be reduced by pretreating the bleached enamel surface with antioxidant agents.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mode of failure of composite restorations bonded to bleached enamel surfaces pretreated with nano-chitosan.

Materials and Methods:

Forty extracted human maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10): unbleached enamel restored with composite, bleached enamel restored immediately, bleached enamel restored after a two-week delay, and bleached enamel pretreated with nano-chitosan before composite restoration. Failure modes were analyzed using a universal testing machine and evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test (p < 0.05).

Results:

The nano-chitosan–treated group showed a higher incidence of cohesive failure within the enamel substrate (70%) compared with the other groups.

Conclusion:

Pretreatment of bleached enamel with nano-chitosan improved bonding performance, as indicated by an increased occurrence of cohesive failures.
