Abstract

Oral Submucous Fibrosis is characterized by fibrosis of the oral mucosa, leading to rigidity, trismus, and an increased risk of malignant transformation. Apart from areca nut chewing, systemic factors such as nutritional deficiencies and hematological imbalances may play a significant role in the pathogenesis and progression of OSMF. One such systemic factor is anemia, particularly low hemoglobin levels, which may contribute to impaired tissue oxygenation and reduced mucosal healing capacity. This literature review focuses on understanding the interplay between hemoglobin levels and the clinical severity of OSMF, which could provide valuable insights into its pathophysiology and open avenues for more comprehensive management strategies.
